'A powerful new documentary released in part to help Cambodians prepare mentally for the upcoming Khmer Rouge tribunal. ... "Deacon of Death" is a highly personalized documentary about a woman's confrontation with the man she says massacred her family. The movie, which won Best Documentary at the 2004 Dutch Film Festival, is in Khmer with English-language subtitles. 2009: a new DVD with extra’s

Many organisations in Cambodia want to use the film in villages, like TPO, Save the Children, Racha and Healthnet International. We received a grant from the Dutch Embassy in Bangkok to make a new DVD of the film, with extra’s: discussions in the village after seeing the film together with Mr Karoby, discussions with students in the capital Phnom Penh, etc

The film will be used in other countries as well and will be broadcasted in Cambodian television.

Screening in the village

Cambodian Daily, July 2005: After screening in the village:

'When the film “Deacon of Death” was shown at the Ta Pein commune office here on July 21, the former Khmer Rouge commune security chief now known as Karoby had to have his blood pressure checked. “The eyes of the villagers would look at the film and then look at the face of Karoby,” deputy commune Chief Duch Sokhom said Monday. “He looked at the ground. He was very afraid the villagers would ask him questions.”
